Surviving Quarantine


It’s a grand understatement to say that 2020 has not turned out as planned. 2019 was a not so bad year for me but I spent a great deal of time doing introspection and coming up with all the things I needed to improve and making plans on how 2020 was going to be an amazing year, personally and business wise. 

Then along comes Covid-19… curfews …. Lockdowns and an array of restrictions… pretty much life as we know it has changed and will continue to change. So what do we do now that we have to be spending more and more time at home? How do we stop from going stir crazy? How do we still accomplish our goals for 2020?

I had to take some time to ask myself all these questions. Being home was not the biggest issue for me, after all I’ve been working from home for almost 5 years now.  My routines however now needed to change. I can no longer hit the gym in the mornings and those occasional drinks with friends now have to be done from home, trips to the beach are no more and even conducting business now has to be changed up. 

A few ways that i’ve managed to create my “new life” include:

  • Working Out At Home  

Workouts are not just for weight loss as most may think. Working out is a great way to improve your overall mood and energy. The chemicals released during exercise can help us feel more relaxed and aid in handling stress and avoiding depression. Now where a lot of us have had to resort to working from home finding a simple routine is good for ensuring we are active. 

Workouts can vary from walks in your community to finding videos online that you enjoy. For me I’m a huge kick boxing fan and TaeBo has been my go to workout programme over the last few weeks. The advantage of working out from home is the ability to work out at your pace and to the programme of your choice. Finding something you enjoy will certainly help in keeping you consistent.

  • Home Visits with Friends

2020 has meant no fetes, no beach, no road trips, no night out for drinks with friends. For singles, especially, time to socialise with friends is very important. So what do you do when you can’t go out with friends? You stay in with them!! 

Over the past few months since being on “lock down” I’ve found myself hosting more in home activities with friends. We have games days, kalooki days and we have turned special occasions such as birthdays, mothers day and so on into cookout days. Having these occasions to interact with friends goes a long way in keeping you sane during a lockdown. For those days or nights when we can’t be together we have found online apps that allow us to play games like UNO and Ludi together.

  • Working on Goals

There is no better time than now to hone in on your goals. For most of us the constant hassle of commuting to work leaves us drained by the time we get home or just simply distracted from them. Despite having worked from home over the past few years, I’ve found myself energised and motivated when it comes to smashing out my goals.

The increased time at home has found me reviewing old goals, updating existing ones and more actively working towards my personal and business goals. Bit by bit as I cross tasks off my list, I’ve increased my sense of accomplishment and made strides towards more living on purpose.

Greatest lesson so far learnt during this pandemic is the importance of being able to evolve as the world changes and letting go of the things that are beyond our control.
